May 2 (Sunday) Raleigh - 10th Annual Second Empire 5K Classic - 2:00 p.m. - 5,000m, 1 mile, Kid's Dash - Contact: Jim Young at (919)873-1207 or at tjyoung@mindspring.com

In 2008 a crowd of over 500 runners and walkers turned out for this event in downtown Raleigh. Tim Surface (15:55) was the overall winner. Angelina Blackmon ran 16:50 to win the women’s title. Course records are held by Abdul Alzindani (14:32) and Jemissa Hess (16:36).

The race, which is usually held in the fall, was not held in 2009 so it could move to a spring date

The start/finish area is located at Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern, which is located at 330 Hillsborough Street in downtown Raleigh - three blocks west of the Capitol next to the round Clarion Inn.

The afternoon begins with the start of the 5K at 2 pm followed by the mile at 3pm and the Kids’ 100-Yard Dash at 3:15.

The entry fees are $20 for the 5K if received NLT April 24th, $25 from April 25th to May 1, and $30 on race day. The entry fee includes a short-sleeved technical shirt guaranteed to all those whose entries are received NLT April 24th. After that date the race will do their best to provide everyone with a shirt but cannot guarantee it. For the 1-mile run, the entry fee is $10, and for the Kid’s Dash, the fee is $5. The latter two entry fees do not include a shirt, but a shirt can be ordered with those entries for an additional $10 if received NLT April 24th.

Those entering the 5K have the option of registering as a competitive or recreational entrant. Here is the difference:

Competitive entrants are those who wish to receive an official finishing time, to be eligible awards, and/or get credit for participating in a race which is part of the Second Empire Spring Grand Prix.

Recreational entrants are those who do not care about receiving an official time, being eligible for awards and/or receiving points in the Grand Prix. Recreational entrants can either time themselves or see their finish times on a digital clock at the finish line.

In the 5K, all competitive entrants will be timed using the new BibTag system developed by MyLaps Sport Timing. All of the electronic components are in the bib, which eliminates picking up a chip on race day and chip collecting after the race. Each participant will receive a “chip time” and a “gun time” with awards all based on “gun times.” No official times will be taken for those signing up as recreational entrants in the 5k, the Mile or the Kid’s Dash, but all finishers will be able to see their finishing times on a digital clock at the finish line.

In the 5K, awards will be presented to the top three males overall, to the top three females overall, to the top three master finishers of each sex, to the top three wheelchair finishers and to the top three finishers in each of the following age divisions: (both sexes) 12-under, 13-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, and 75-over.

Pre-register entrants can pick up their race packets and late entrants can register at The Athlete's Foot located at 2035 Cameron Street in Cameron Village on Friday, April 30 from 5-7 pm or on Saturday, May 1, at the CU Fitness Center from 2-4 pm.  Pre-register entrants can also pick up their race packets and late entrants can register on race day at the start/finish area beginning at 12 noon. The CU Fitness Center is located in the 400 block of Hillsborough Street – a half-block west of the Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern.

Once again the Second Empire Grand Prix Classic will feature the CU Fitness Pump ‘n Run. In this competition, males will bench press 80% of their body weight and women will press 40%.of their weight. For each press, 15 seconds will be subtracted from the individual’s 5K time. The bench presses can be done either at packet pickup on Saturday, May 1, at the CU Fitness Center from 2-4 pm or on race day beginning at 12 noon.   The cost of this competition is an additional $5 paid at weigh-in,  Awards will be presented to the top three males and to the top three females with the lowest net times.
