The Run for the Roses, now in its 32ndt year, is the area’s oldest continuous run road race. In 2011 over 550 runners and walkers registered for the event.

Brett Howell led all finishers in the 5K with a 16:23 clocking. Catherine Seaton won the women’s competition in 18:40 and established a new course mark for the women. Derrin Pierret holds the men’s course mark of 16:12 set in 2010.

The event starts and finishes at the Halifax Community Center located at 1015 Halifax Street in downtown Raleigh.  Click here to download a course map.

There are two categories of competition – individual or couples. When signing up, registrants must choose between competing as an individual competitor or as part of a male/female couple’s team.

In the individual competition, awards will be presented to the first three males overall, to the first three females overall, to the first two masters of each sex overall, and to the top three finishers in each of the following age groups: (both sexes) 12-under, 13-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80-over.

In the couples competition, awards will be given to the top three couples overall with the lowest combined times.

The entry fee is $25 for the 5K while the Children’s Fun Run is free. NCRC members get a $3 discount.  The entry fee includes a t-shirts to all those who enter by February 1.

The race also features the popular Pump ‘n Run competition in which women will be required to bench press 50% of their weight and men will press 100% of their weight. For each press, 30 seconds will be subtracted from one’s 5K time. Awards will be presented to the three males and three females with the lowest net times. Entrants can enter this competition on race day by paying an additional $5 fee.

On race day, the race will be collecting pet food donations for local shelter and rescue groups.  In 2011 over 800 lbs was donated.

The Run for the Roses is also the second event in the ten-race Second Empire Spring 2012 Grand Prix Series. Runners who participate in these races accumulate points and are awarded money and prizes at an awards banquet held at the Second Empire Restaurant at the conclusion of the Series. February 18 (Saturday) Sanford - The President's Day Freedom Run – 10 a.m. - 5,000 meters, 1 mile - Contact: Stephanie Larson at SDrPharm@gmail.com.

Last year a field of 140 runners and walkers registered for this 5K race, Connor Kelly, the two-time defending champion, made it three in a row taking top honors in 17:09. Jessica Schmidt was the top female finishers setting a new women’s course record of 18:52. Derek Fenton holds the course record for the men.(16:04) which he set in 2008.

The race is managed by Boy Scout Troop 806 in Sanford and the proceeds benefit that organization.

The 5K race begins at 10 am followed by the 1-mile event for children ages 12 and younger at 11 am. Both races start and finish at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Meeting House located at 3204 Keller-Andrews Road, Sanford, NC 27330.The 5K course is certified.

February 25 (Saturday) Raleigh –  Special Olympics NC Torch Run 5K – 8:30 am – 5,000 meters, Kid’s Dash – Contact: Amy Orders at amy_orders@ncsu.edu.

For several years, there has been a Polar Bear Plunge in which people jump into the lake on Raleigh’s Centennial Campus. In 2009 the organizers added a 5K race to the event where you can wear running shoes, as many clothes as you want, and do not have to go swimming.

In 2011, a record field of over 700 runners and walkers registered for the 5K event. Brett Howell won the race in 16:13. Tracie Talbert was the top woman finisher in 20:57. Srini Iyer (16:08) and Kimberly Bowler (19:35) hold the course marks. Both performances were recorded in 2010

The race starts at the corner of Campus Shore Drive and Main Campus Drive on the Centennial Campus. (Enter 2400 Campus Shore Drive, Raleigh, NC on your GPS or web site for the exact location.) Registration opens at 7:30am. The 5k race starts at 8:30 am and the kid’s dash begins at 9:30 am

No official times will be taken in the fun run, but each finisher will receive a medal.

This is a new event for this area which is being held in honor of Dr. Lynn Ennis, a professor with the MBA program at NC State University, who unexpectedly passed away in July 2010.  Proceeds from the MBA Wolfpack Run will be donated in honor of Dr.Ennis to the Gregg Museum of Art & Design

The race will start and finish at the Dorothy and Roy Park Alumni Center on NC State’s Centennial Campus. The Center is located at 2450 Alumni Drive. The course will run entirely within the Centennial Campus.

The entry fee is $25, increasing to $30 after February 17, up to and including race day. T-shirts are guaranteed to all those registered by the 2/17; afterwards, is “while supplies last.”

There also is a special "t-shirt only" option for $15 with all those proceeds gping directly to the Museum.

Late entrants can register and pre-registered entrants can pick up their packets at the Alumni Center on Friday, March 2, from 3- 6pm or on race day at the Center beginning at 9 am.

This is a new event for this area put on by Cooper Elementary PTA in Clayton. The races will all start and finish at the school which is located at 849 North Mial Street in Clayton.

The morning will begin with the mile at 9 am followed by the start of the 5K at 9:30 am. The Kid’s Dash will start at 10:30 am.

Late entrants can register and pre-registered entrants can pick up their packets beginning at 7:30 am on race day. The mile begins at 9 am followed by the start of the 5K Run/5K Walk at 9:30 am. The Kid’s Dash will start at 10:30 am.

Entry fees will be as follows: 5K Run - $20, 5K Walk - $15, Mile - $10. Kid’s Dash - $5. After February 10th, the fees for the 5K Run and 5K Walk will increase to $25 and $20, respectively. T-shirts are guaranteed to all those entered in the 5K run by February 18th. After that date, it will be “as supplies last.”

In the 5K run, awards will be presented to the first three males overall, to the first three females overall and to the first three finishers in each of the following age divisions (both sexes): 11-under, 12-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-over. In both the 5K Walk and the mile, awards will be given to the first three finishers. All those who participate in the Kid’s Dash will receive a ribbon.

Proceeds from the race will be donated by the Cooper Elementary PTA to Cooper Elementary for the purchase of Smart Boards for the classrooms.

This is a new event for this area put on by the folks at the NCSU Veterinary School to benefit the IRONDOG, a new charity established for veterinary patients which raises funds through endurance events. You can find more information on the IRONDOG NC chapter on Facebook.

The race will start and finish at the NC Museum of Art located at 2110 Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh and will be run on the Greenway trails.

Entrants in the 5K have a choice of entering as competitive entrant or a recreational entry. Competitive entrants will receive a chip and an official time and be eligible for awards. Recreational entrants will not receive an official time, but will be able to see their finishing times on a digital clock at the finish line.

In addition to the 5K, there also will be a 1-Mile Dog Walk. Times will be displayed on the digital clock at the finish line.  NOTE: Dogs are not permitted in the 5K.

The entry fee for the 5K is $25, increasing to $30 after February 15. The fees for the Dog Walk are $20 and $25, respectively. T-shirts are guaranteed to all those registered by February 15.

In the 5K awards will be presented to the first male finisher overall, to the first female finisher overall, and to the top three finishers in each of the following age groups (both sexes): 12-under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-over. Awards will also be presented to the first male and female veterinarians to finish as well as to the first male and female student to finish who are attending the NCSU Vet School  The top finishers will get gift certificates from Inside-Out Sports.

Late entrants can register and pre-registered runners can pick up their packets at Inside-Out Sports in Cary located at 2002 Grisdale Lane on Thursday, March 1, from 4-7 pm or on race day at the NC Museum of Art beginning at 1 pm.

March 10 (Saturday) Raleigh - Run for the Oaks - 8:30 a.m. - 5,000 meters, 1/4 mile - Contact: Kira Stewart at kira.stewart@raleighnc.org

The 2012 version of the Run for the Oaks will be the 30th annual running of this event. Over 600 runners signed up for this race in 2011. Brett Howell won the race in 16:19. Sarah Lee won the women's title in 18:21. Mark Andrews (14:23) holds the course mark for the men. Tara Wojcieckowski (16:58) holds the women’s course mark.

The 5K is the first race of the day starting at 8:30 a.m. The kid's run for children ages 10 or younger begins at 9:30 a.m. The course starts and finishes at the City Market. There will be water at the start and finish plus a water stop at the ½-way point. Splits will be called each mile. Registration and packet pickup will be held at the City Market (look for the signs when you get there).

The entry fees are $18 for recreational entries and $23 for competitive entries. After March 3, the fees are $20 and $25, respectively. The entry fee includes a t-shirt. There is no pre-registration or fee for the Children’s Run. Kids can sign up race day.

The competitive entry will be issued a chip, will receive an official time and be eligible for awards. The recreational entry will not receive an official time. However, there will be a digital clock at the finish line where runners can see their finishing times.

Awards will be presented to the first three males overall, to the first three females overall and to the first three finishers in each of the following age groups (both sexes); 15-under, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, and 60-over.

Late entrants can register and preregistered runners can pick up their packets on Thursday, March 8, at Capital RunWalk located at 430 Woodburn Road in Cameron Village between 5-7. Also late entrants can register and preregistered runners can pick up their packets at Moore Square on race day beginning at 7 am.

Once again the Run for the Oaks is the first race in the Eastern Carolina Corporate Cup Road Race Series. Teams can consist of 3-5 members (all working for the same employer) with the first three finishers on each team comprising the team score. Awards will be presented to the top three male teams and to the top three female teams.

The Run for the Oaks is also the fourth event in the ten-race Second Empire Spring 2012 Grand Prix Series. March 17 (Saturday) Clayton – C3 5K Run for Peru - 9:00 am – 5,000 meters, Fun Run – Contact: Katie Chatham at katie@c3church.com

In March, 2011, in its debut, this event had over 400 entrants, the majority of which were attendees or members of the sponsoring Cleveland Community Church. The race starts and ends at the Church which is located at 8246 Cleveland Road in Clayton.

Teenage runners led the way in the 5K. Eighteen-year-old Matthew Loeffler took top honors in 19:19. Carmen Torme,15, led all the women in 22:20. Since this was a new course, both are course records.

The fun run begins at 9:00 am; the featured 5K starts at 9:30 am.

Entrants have a choice of entering the 5K as either as a competitive or recreational runner. The entry fees are the same for each category - $25, increasing to $30 on race day. The fee for the mile is $10, increasing to $15 on race day. The entry fee includes a t-shirt.

Awards will be given to the first three male finishers to the first three female finishers overall, and to the first three finishers in each of the following age groups (both sexes): 13-under, 14-17, 18-24, 25-35, and 36-up.

Proceeds from the race will be used to send a team from the Church to Lima, Peru, to build a home for women caught in sex trafficking.

 


March 24th (Saturday) Raleigh – MOB 5th Annual 5K Run – 8:30 am – 1-Mile Fun Run, 5,000 meters – Contact: Dawn White at (919)772-6264x227 or at dawnwhite@wakechristianacademy.com.

In May, 2011, a record field of over 130 runners and walkers came out for this event. Bobby Mack won the race in 15:53, while Shelby Van Pelt took the women’s title in 22:48. Both performances were course records.

This event will be run entirely within the campus of Wake Christian Academy in South Raleigh. The school is located just off 401 South at 5500 Wake Academy Drive. Click here to download a 5K course map.

The featured 5K will begin at 8:30 am followed by the start of the Family 1-Mile Fun Run.

The entry fee for the 1-mile Fun Run is $15.  For the 5K, the fee is $20, if registered  on or before March 10, and $25 thereafter, up to and including race day.  Entrants in the 5K have a choice if entering as either competitive (timed) or recreational (not timed). Shirts are guaranteed to all those registering NLT March 10.

In the 5K, awards will be given to the top three males overall, to the top three females overall, and to the top three finishers in each of the following age groups - (both sexes) 14-under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60-over.

Late entries can register and pre-registered entrants can pick up their race packets on Friday, March 23rd from 2:30-4 pm at the WCA Auditorium or on race day, beginning at 7:30 am.

Each child finishing the mile will receive a medal.

March 24 (Saturday) Oxford -2012 Oxford Run for Life - 9:00 a.m. - 5,000 meters, 1 mile - Contact: Mary Caudle at mcaudle@oxfordnc.org.

This race, organized and managed by the Oxford Parks and Recreation Department, is to benefit the American Cancer Society. In 2011, a field of 100 runners/walkers registered for this event. Wayne Painter won the race in 19:51. Meredith Croke set a new women’s course mark as she ran the course in 22:06. Jarrett Prady holds the men’s course mark of 16:57 set in 2007.

The 5K is the first event of the day starting at 9:00 am while the one mile run/walk begins at 10:00 a.m.

The entry fees for either race are $10 for Recreation Runners/Walkers who do not wish to have an official time and $15 for those who wish to be timed. The fee is only $10 for those under age 19 who wish to get an official time. On race day, all fees increase by $5. The first 200 entrants will receive a t-shirt.

In both races, awards will be given to the top three males overall, to the top three females overall, and to the top finishers in each of the following age divisions: 6-under, 7-12, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-over.

March 25 (Sunday) Raleigh - 12th Annual Second Empire 5K Classic - 2:00 p.m. - 5,000m, 1 mile, Kid's Dash - Contact: Jim Young at (919)873-1207 or at tjyoung@mindspring.com

In 2011 a crowd of over 300 runners and walkers turned out for this event in downtown Raleigh. Srini Iyer (15:47) was the overall winner. Debra Warner ran 20:44 to win the women’s title. Course records are held by Abdul Alzindani (14:32) and Jemissa Hess (16:36).

The race, which was held in April, has been moved up a few weeks.

The start/finish area is located at Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern, which is located at 330 Hillsborough Street in downtown Raleigh - three blocks west of the Capitol next to the round Clarion Inn.

The afternoon begins with the start of the 5K at 2 pm followed by the mile at 3 pm and the Kids’ 100-Yard Dash at 3:15.

The entry fees are $20 for the 5K if received on or before March 4th, $25 from March 6th through March 24th, and $30 on race day (March 25th). The entry fee includes a long-sleeved technical shirt guaranteed to all those whose entries are received on or before March 4th. After that date the race will do their best to provide everyone with a shirt but cannot guarantee it. For the 1-mile run, the entry fee is $10, and for the Kid’s Dash, the fee is $5. The latter two entry fees do not include a shirt, but a shirt can be ordered with those entries for an additional $12 if received on or before March 4th.

Those entering the 5K have the option of registering as a competitive or recreational entrant. Here is the difference:

Competitive entrants are those who wish to receive an official finishing time, to be eligible awards, and/or get credit for participating in a race which is part of the Second Empire Spring Grand Prix.

Recreational entrants are those who do not care about receiving an official time, being eligible for awards and/or receiving points in the Grand Prix. Recreational entrants can either time themselves or see their finish times on a digital clock at the finish line.

In the 5K, all competitive entrants will be timed and will receive a “chip time” and a “gun time” with awards all based on “gun times.” No official times will be taken for those signing up as recreational entrants in the 5k, the Mile or the Kid’s Dash, but all finishers will be able to see their finishing times on a digital clock at the finish line.

In the 5K, awards will be presented to the top three males overall, to the top three females overall, to the top three master finishers of each sex, to the top three wheelchair finishers and to the top three finishers in each of the following age divisions: (both sexes) 12-under, 13-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, and 75-over.

Pre-registered entrants can pick up their race packets and late entrants can register either on Friday, March 23, at CapitalRun/Walk in Cameron Village from 4-7 pm or on Saturday, March 24th from 2-4 pm next door to Second Empire Restaurant at 326 Hillsborough St. Pre-registered entrants can also pick up their race packets and late entrants can register on race day at the start/finish area beginning at 12 noon.

The Second Empire 5K Classic is the fifth race in the Second Empire Spring 2012 Grand Prix Series. Runners who participate in these races accumulate points and are awarded money and prizes at an awards banquet held at the Second Empire Restaurant at the conclusion of the Series.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Trinity Academy of Raleigh.

March 31 (Saturday) Kinston - The Kinston 8,000: Run for the River - 8:30 a.m. - 8,000 meters, 1 Mile– Contact: Adrian King at aking.director@suddenlinkmail.com

Last year, this event had a field of over 180 registered entries. Devin Swann successfully defended the title he had won in 2008, 2009, and 2010 as he covered the flat downtown route in 24:56. Heather Magill also made it four in a row as she won the women’s competition in 20:01, breaking Beth Green’s women‘s course record of 28:56 set in 2006.. Swann holds the men’s course record of 24:00 which he ran in 2010.

The race will start at the Neuseway Nature Center and Campground. The mile begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 8K starts at 9:00 a.m.

Once again, the race will offer cash awards to the winners - $500 each to the first-place male and female finishers, $300 in cash to the second-place finishers and $150 to the third-place finishers. Medals will also be given to the first three finishers in each of the following age groups: (both sexes) 14-under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, and 60-over. The top three male and the top three female finishers from Lenior County will also receive $50 each.

In the mile, each finisher receives an award.

A pre-race dinner and party for runners, volunteers and spectators will be held at 6 pm Friday, the 30th, at the Hampton Inn in Kinston. Race packets can be picked up and late entrants can register at that time/

Running with one’s dog is generally discouraged in area races, but this is one event where it is encouraged – even required.

Last year 53 participants finished the 5K cross-county run while others did the 2-mile dog walk. Branden Spencer led all finishers in 23:10. Gina Battaglia led the women in 23:42.

The start/finish area is at the NC State Faculty Club located at 4200 Hillsborough Street just west of the Beltline.

The 5K starts at 12 noon The Dog Walk begins at 1:30 pm. Dogs can also participate in the 5K.

The entry fees are $20.00 for the 5K and $10 for the 2-Mile Dog Walk. After 3/26, both fees increase by $5. Late entrants can register and pre-registered entrants can pick up their packets beginning at 11:00 am on race day.

In the 5K run the first male overall, the first female overall and the top male and female under 18 will receive awards. All registrants will receive a water bottle – guaranteed to those pre-registered..

Cheri Reed, owner of the Java Jive coffee house in Cary, is hosting this first-time race which she hopes will lead to several more. One of the area’s oldest events, this race has been run since the late 70’s. The race, which starts and finishes at the Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary, is managed by the Department of Parks, Recreational and Cultural Resources in Cary.

In April of 2011, over 1,000 people participated. John Lindehauer (34:12) and Rita Beard (42:06) were the overall winners in the 10K. Travis Walter (32:57) and Tara Wojciechowski (36:41) hold the course records.

In the 5K David Meeker won after covering the course in 18:22. Kimberlie Fowler was the top woman finisher in 18:41. Peter Ellis (15:57 and Brennan Liming (18:13) hold the course marks in the 5K.

April 14 (Saturday) Cary – Kay Brewer Memorial 5K for Greater Raleigh Young Life - 9:00 a.m. - 5,000 meters, 1.5-Mile Fub Run/Walk - Contact: Young Life office at (919)833-6576 or at greaterraleighyounglife@gmail.com

In 2011 this race had a record field of 425 entrants. Seth Crawford won the race in 17:22. Meghan Hegarty won the women’s competition 20:36. Hegarty and Jennifer Curitn share the women’s course record of 20:23 and Stanley Kipchumba and Nicholas Robin are co-holders of the men’s course mark of 17:10, also set in 2009.

Once again, the race will be run on the cross-country courses at WakeMed Soccer Park located at 201 Soccer Park Drive in Cary. The route being used is the same one used for the New Balance Reindeer Romp in December. Click here to download a course map.

The entry fee is $25 increasing to $30 after April 7th. The fee includes a t-shirt guaranteed to all those registered by April 6th. After that, it will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participants in the 5K can either register as a “competitive” or a “recreational” participant. The competitive runners will be issued chips, will receive official times, and be eligible for awards. The recreational runner/walker will not receive an official time but will be able to see his/her finishing time in a digital clock at the finish line.

In 2011 this race had a field of 600 entrants. Joe Moore won the 5K race in 15:02. Sarah Hogan won the won the women’s competition 18:34. Both performances were course records.

The event takes place at St, Timothy’s School which is located at 4523 Six Forks Road in Raleigh and is managed by The Rotary Club of the Capital City.

Last year 70 runners finished the 5K led by Max Hogan’s 18:13 clocking. Rebecca Malcolm won the women’s title in 21:49.

The race starts and finishes on the 100 block of Church Street in downtown Broadway and is part of the town’s Broadway Our Way Festival. Late registration and packet pickup will be held at the Broadway Presbyterian Church located at 211 South Main Street.

The entry fee is $25 and includes a shirt to all those registered by March 15. There is no late fee and people can register on race day, but shirts are guaranteed only to those registered by March 15th. There also is a 200-runner limit.

Awards will be presented to the first three males overall, to the first three females overall, and to the first three finishers (both sexes) in each of the following age divisions: 19-under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70-over.

In 2011 104 finishers completed the course led by Richard Ferguson in 19:26. Ginger Bass won the women’s competition 22:15.

A record field of 1,300 runners and walkers registered for this event in 2011. Joe Moore was the class of the field as he covered the certified downtown 5K course in 14:44 – breaking the course record by one second.. Alicia Parr ran 19:19 to claim the women’s crown. Splits will be called at miles 1 & 2 and at the halfway mark. There will be 1 water station on the course. BibTag timing will be used to guarantee accurate results.

This race will offer each entrant in the 5K a choice of being a competitive or recreational entrant. Recreational entrants are those who don’t care about being eligible for awards and do not want an official time. This will be the 19th running of this event which in the past was traditionally held the first Saturday in March.

In 2011 Brett Howell won the 10K race in 33:19 while Shannon Lowery won the women's competition in 41:12. Darby Reed set the course record of 31:08 in 1998. Tara Wojciechowski holds the course mark for women of 35:34 set in 2002.

The 5K winners included James Lavin who won with a 17:52 effort and Sophia Ebihara who won the women’s title in 21:06, Kristin Price holds the women’s course record of 17:43. The 5K course record for the men is held by Adam Eigenrauch (15:55).

This is one of the most popular races in Eastern NC – a place to go to have a “good time” as opposed to running a “good time.”

In 2011 a field of over 450 runners/walkers registered for this 5K event. Both the male and female defending champions took top honors again. Chad Motz (17:02) won the race while Jennifer Holiday won the women’s title in 20:09. Jason Page holds the course record for the men of 16:46. Megan Holden holds the women’s course record of 18:37

The 5K course is gently rolling and is run over mostly hard-packed dirt/gravel/sand trails in the tree-shaded woods And even though the race is professionally run with ChampionChip timing and everything running like clockwork, the atmosphere is low key with plenty of beer at the finish.

One of the area’s oldest continuously run road races, this event, now in its 29th year, is part of the East Carolina Corporate Road Race series.

In 201 over 160 runners and walkers registered for the 5K. They were led by Gavin Coombs in 16:43. Lauren Strapp led the women across the finish line in 19:30.

The 5K Run and the 5K Health Walk both begin at 9 am, and the 1/10-mile Tot Trot starts at 9:45 am. The 5K starts on 111 East 2nd Street at the Clayton Center and finishes on Horne Street behind the Town Hall. The Tot Trot starts and finishes on Horne Street and will start as soon as the 5K is finished.

May 19 (Saturday) Cary –North Carolina National MPS Society 5K Walk/Run – 8:30 am - 5,000 meters, Mile – Contact: Terri Klein at terri@mpssociety.org.

While this event has been held in other parts of the state before, this is a new event for our area. The race will be run in Bond Park in Cary and will feature a choice of participating in either the 5K Run (timed) , 5K Walk (untimed) or the 1-Mile Fun Walk..

The entry fee is $20 for the 5K Run, $10 for the Walk, and $40 for family. Special designed t-shirts will be given to the first 300 registrants. On race day, the fees increase to $5 for each category. One can register on-line, by mail or in person on race day. Awards for age groups will be presented immediately following the event.

The 12th Anniversary Walk/Run benefits research which has now created 3 treatments for these terminal childhood diseases. These runs have raised over $4 million dollars and has saved the lives children around the country.

Last year a record field of over 500 runners and walkers registered for Greenville’s first twilight race. Blake Justice (17:59) and Esther Fisher (19:12) were the overall winners. Fisher’s effort was a new women’s course record. Paul Potorti set the men’s course mark of 17:45 in 2010.

May 20 (Sunday) Cary – NC Roadrunners Club Invitational ½ Marathon and 10K - 7:00 a.m. -13.1 miles, 10,000 meters - Contact: iosclassic@ncroadrunners.org.

In 2011, at the Road Runners Club of American (RRCA) National Convention, this event, which was then known as the Inside-Out Sports Classic, was named the 2010 Road Race of the Year,

And the honors continue to come as this year the 10K race has been named the RRCA National 10K Championship.

In 2011 over 900 runners signed up for this event. Mitch VanBruggen (1:13:05) and Jennifer Modliszewski (1:27:53) were tops in the half-marathon, Joe Moore (1:10:56) holds the men’s course mark set in 2010. Modliszewski (1:22:09) also set the women’s course mark in 2010.

In the 10K, David Reid (35:32) was the fastest. Sarah Hogan was the women’s champion with a course-record 38:34. Paul Himberger (34:10) holds the men’s course mark in the 10K.

June 23rd (Saturday) Cary – Clare’s Run for a Reason - 8:30 am – 5,000 meters, 1 mile – Contact: Sarah Whitenack at swhitenack@nc.rr.com.

The event is being held to honor Clare Whitenack, who died without cause or reason, suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 19 months. All proceeds will benefit the Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) Program, a cousin of SIDS that affects children after their first birthday.

This race debuted last year with over 330 entrants running through the trails at WakeMed Soccer Park. McKinley Gray led the pack across the finish line in 19:22. Lorraine Young was the fastest woman in the field with a 20:19 effort.

The 5K and 1 mile walk will both begin at 8:30am

Last year, in its second year, this event attracted over 290 entrants. Fadi Hanna completed the 5K route in 17:35 to win the overall award. Kimberlie Fowler was the top female finishing in 18:42. Both are new course records.

August 25 (Saturday) Cary – 18th Annual Run for Life – 8:00 am – 5,000m, 1 mile – Contact: Bob & Kathy Klein at blk4jmj@juno.com.

In 2011 almost 300 runners and walkers registered for this event which is held at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. Originally the race was scheduled for the last Saturday in August as it is now, but a hurricane forced the race to be moved to November. Ryan Kaat took top honors in 16:19 – a course record for the event. Rebecca Boggs won the women’s competition in 19:28. Anna Clinton holds the women’s course mark of 18:56 set in 2009.

The mile run begins at 8 am, and the 5K starts at 8:30 am. Both race are timed with the ChampionChip.

September 8 (Saturday) Raleigh – North Hills 5K – 9 am – 5,000 meters, mile, Kid’s 100-yard dash – Contact: Spencer Good at sgood@rocraleigh.com.

Now in its sixth year, this race had over 340 entrants in 2011. Betty Springs was the overall winner with a 18:25 effort – a new course record for women and a new 5K state record for Women 50-54. Connor Lane, age 12, finished second and took the men’s title with a 19:10 clocking. Erastus Kiama holds the men’s course mark of 17:08 set in 2007.

The races all start and finish at the Trinity Baptist Church located at 4815 Six Forks Road.

September 8 (Saturday) Middlesex – Warren “SNEAK” Lewis 5K Memorial Run – 8:30 am – 5,000 meters, mile – Contact: Miste Strickland at miste.strickland@nashcountync.gov

On June 11, 2011, Investigator Warren Lewis, 38, along with members of the United States Marshals Service, went to a residence on West Lenoir Avenue in Kinston to serve a warrant in connection with a murder investigation. They were conducting a search of the residence when Investigator Lewis was shot and killed.

Five suspects, including three who were wanted in connection with the original murder warrant, were arrested at the location after a 30 minute standoff. Four of the subjects were charged with Investigator Lewis' murder and two were also charged in connection with the original murder warrant.

Investigator Lewis had served with the Nash County Sheriff's Office for nine years and was a sworn Deputy United States Marshal assigned to the Eastern North Carolina Fugitive Task Force. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and parents

A 5K race to honor the memory of Warren Lewis will be held in Middlesex. Proceeds from the race will go to the Warren “SNEAK” Lewis Law Enforcement Foundation. The foundation has two main objectives, to provide yearly scholarships to local high school students and to assist law enforcement officers and their families across the state in times of need as voted on by the foundation's Board of Directors.

The 5K will begin at 8:30 am followed by the start of the mile. In the 5K awards will be given to the top three males overall, to the top three females overall and to the top three finishers in each age group.

September 15 (Saturday) Morrisville –Jack and Jill Ran Up the Hill - 8 am – 5,000 meters, 1 mile – Contact: Pamela Taylor at PTaylor@pwbcpa.com.

The name of this race a bit misleading since it is run on one of the flattest course in the Triangle with nary a hill in sight. The race starts and finishes at the Cedar Fork Community Center located at 1050 B Town Hall Drive in Morrisville. It is the same course used by the Run with Heart 5K in August

In its debut last September, the event had 170 registered entrants. Kevin Hill led the field in 16:51 while Sophia Ebihara took the women’s title in 20:19.

September 22 (Saturday) Raleigh – The Patrol Stroll – 8:30 am – 5,000 meters, 1 mile, MADD's Kid's Dash – Contact: L.W. McKeithan at lwmckeithan@nchsp.org

Bobby Mack took top honors in the 2011 edition of this race with a 14:28 clocking – breaking the course record by 34 seconds. Betty Geiger took the women’s title in 17:45 – just 15 seconds slower than Jemissa Van Hoy’s course record of 17:30 set in 2010.

The race starts and finishes at the NCSHP Training Facility near Garner located at 3318 Old Garner Road, Raleigh, NC 27610. Part of the race is run on the NC Highway Patrol Driving Track.

September 29 (Saturday) Morrisville –Run for Healthier Babies – 9 am – 5,000 meters, 1 mile – Contact: LaRonda Scott at (919)781-2481 or LScott@marchofdimes.org.

In its ninth year in 2011, this race had over 400 entrants. Fast times were the order of the day as Paul Springer led all runners with a 15:35 clocking. Betty Geiger won the women’s competition in 17:22 – missing the women’s course mark by just three seconds. Jemissa Van Hoy holds the women’s course r4cord of 17:19 set in 2010,. Bobby Mack’s 14:34, run in 2009, is the men’s course mark.

The Run for Healthier Babies is also the third event in the 2012 Second Empire Fall 2012 Grand Prix. Runners who participate in these races accumulate points and are awarded money and prizes at an awards banquet held at the Second Empire Restaurant at the conclusion of the Series. October 6 (Saturday) Selma –Selma Railroad Run – 8 am – 5,000 meters – Contact: Joni at selmaparks_rec@yahoo.com.

This 5k Run is the oldest continuous road race in Johnston County and possibly in North Carolina. In 2010, the event had just over 160 entrants. Brandon Carter won the 5K in 16:35 while Kimberlie Fowler took the women’s title in 17:39.

This USATF-sanctioned race begins promptly at 8 am at the intersection of Webb and Waddell Streets. Both the Family 5K Fun Walk and the 5K run begin at the same time and are run on the same USAT&F-certified course. No official timing will take place for the Walk, but finishers will be able to see their finishing times on the finish line clock. Click here for a copy of the course map.

October 13th (Saturday) Raleigh – Triangle Run/Walk for Autism  - 9:00 a.m. - 5,000m, Mile, Kid’s Dash - Contact: Heather Hargrave (919)743-0208 or hhargrave@autismsociety-nc.org.

In 2011 over 1,000 runners finished this 5K with Paul Springer with an event record 15:29, Jordan Jenkins won the women’s competition in 17:39. Georgia Davis holds the women’s course record of 17:27 set in 2008.

The event starts and finishes in Moore Square in downtown Raleigh. The competitive (chip-timed) 5K run begins at 9 am; the non-competitive 5K starts at 9:20 am, the mile kicks off at 9:45 am, and the last race of the day, the kid’s dash, is at 10:30 am

Last year 99 individuals completed the stair climb up 28 floors at the Wells Fargo Capital Center in downtown Raleigh. Troy Alston led all climbers in “course record” 3:06 while Tracey Woodward led the women in 4:27 – also a new best for the women.

Profits from the event will benefit the Carolinas Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
