September 4 (Saturday) Wilmington – March of Dimes 5K for Healthier Babies – 8 am - 5,000 meters, mile – Contact: Michelle McDonald at MEMcDonald@marchofdimes.com. Now in its second year, this event is anticipating a field of 300 runners in the 5K. The race will start and finish behind TrySports in Mayfaire located at 925 Town Center Drive. After August 28th, the fee for the 5K increases to $30, up to and including race day. There also is a “Sleep Walk” division for those who wish to contribute but cannot participate. That fee is $25. In the 5K, awards will be given to the top three males overall, to the top three females overall, to the top three master finishers of each sex, and to the top three finishers in each of the following age groups: 14-under, 15-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-69 and 70-over. September 11 (Saturday) Raleigh – 8th Annual Gail Parkins Memorial Ovarian Awareness Walk and 5K Run – 8:30 a.m. - 5,000 meters - Contact: Melanie Bacheler at ovarianawarenesswalk@hotmail.com In 2009, the high successful Gail Parkins Memorial Ovarian Awarenes Walk added a 5K run. Over 300 runners completed the 5K led by Joe Ballou’s 18:45 clocking. Jennifer Hannen won the women’s competition in 20:28. Since this was the first year that course was used, both times are the course records. The run will begin at 8:30 am and the 2-mile walk will follow at 10:30 am. September 11 (Saturday) Raleigh – North Hills 5K – 9 am – 5,000 meters, mile, Kid’s 100-yard dash – Contact: Spencer Good at sgood@rocraleigh.com. Now in its fourth year, this race had over 400 entrants last year. Jarrett Prady was the overall winner with a 17:20 effort. Elaine Lawrie won the women’s title setting a new course record of 19:07. Erastus Kiama holds the men’s course mark of 17:08 set in 2007. The races all start and finish at the Trinity Baptist Church located at 4815 Six Forks Road. Click here to download a course map. The morning begins with the 5K beginning at 9:00 a.m. The mile starts at 9:15 am, and the 100-yard Kid’s Dash begins at 10:00 a.m. ChampionChip technology will be used to time the 5K. No official times will be taken in the other two races. Entrants in the 5K run can choose to enter as a Competitive or Recreational entry. Competitive entries will be issued a chip, will receive an official time, and be eligible for awards. Recreational entrants will not receive an official time and thus not be eligible for awards. Thay can either time themselves or view their finishing times on a digital clock at the finish line. There also will be a Senior Stroll which begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 9:45 a.m This is a walking event on the Recreation Outreach Center's indoor track. There is no set distance. Participants can register the day of the race for $10, which includes a t-shirt. The entry fee for the 5K is $25 ($30 after September 1st.) The fees for the mile and Kid’s Dash are $15 and $5, respectively, with no late fees. All of those registered for the 5K and mile will receive a dry wick t-shirt as part of their entry fees. This race is organized by the good folks at Maria Parham Medical Center,to benefit the Maria Parham Healthcare Foundation. In 2009, a field of over 70 runners/walkers registered for this event. Heath Davis (19:12) and Cara Grout (23:10) were the overall winners. Aaron Carr holds the course record of 17:42 set in 2008. Jill Metzer (19:54) holds the women’s course record also set in 2008. The course starts and finishes at the Medical Center which is located at 566 Ruin Creek Road in Henderson. The morning begins with the 5K run starting at 8:00 am. The mile and Kid’s Dash will begin approximately at 8:45 am. The entry fees are $25 for the 5K and mile and $10 for the Kid’s Dash. One race day the entry fee for the 5K and mile is $30. T-shirts are given to all 5K and mile entrants. Those entered in the Kid’s Dash can order a t-shirt for an additional $5. Last year a record field of over 700 runners and walkers turned out for what has become one of the area’s premier events attracting the best runners in the state competing for the cash prizes as well as those who just want to participate. Bobby Mack tied the state record in winning the Men’s Mile in 4:13. Kasia Sujkowski won the women’s mile in 5:03. In addition to Mack, seven other runners either tied or established new state records for their age groups. There will actually be three separate mile races – the Med’s Mile at 2:00 pm, the Women’s Mile at 2:20 pm, and the Recreational Mile at 2:40 pm. Participants in the latter race will not receive official times.. Once again the race has been designated at the North Carolina USAT&F State Championship offering cash awards to the top finishers. The top three finishers in both the Men’s Mile and the Women’s Mile will receive $250, $150, and $100 for 1st-, 2n- and 3rd-place, respectively. The top two master male and female finishers will receive awards of $100 and $50 for 1st- and 2nd-place, respectively as will to the top two grandmaster finishers for each sex. Additionally, awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each of the following age groups in the competitive mile: 9-under 10-14, 15-19 and continuing in five-year age groups all the way to 85-over. The two children’s runs will begin at 3 pm. All of the races start and finish on the 400 block of Hillsborough Street next to the Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern. Over 250 runners and walkers registered for this event last year. Mindy Hopper led the field over the downtown Raleigh course in 19;57 – 13 seconds slower than her course record set in 2008. Devin Swann was the class of the field as he led the field of 141 finishers with a 15:02 clocking. Steph Pezzullo won the women's competition in 17:50. The race starts and finishes at the NCSHP Training Facility near Garner located at 3318 Old Garner Road, Raleigh, NC 27610. Part of the race is run on the NC Highway Patrol Driving Track. For the mile, the fee is $15 with no late fee, and for the Kid’s Dash the fee is $2. T0shirts will be given to the first 300 people who enter either the mile or the 5K. Despite a rainy morning, a record field of over 700 runners and walkers came out for the event last year. Victor Ornelas (53:51) and Brennan Liming won the 10 mile run. Erich Fielder (17:13) and Stacy Ruesch ran (19:22) were the victors in the 5K. Since this was a new course, all are course records. This 5k Run is the oldest continuous road race in Johnston County and possibly in North Carolina. In 2009, the event had 145 entrants. Stephen Sykes won the 5K in 16:55 while Katie Leger took the women’s title in 19:25. This USATF-sanctioned race begins promptly at 8 am at the intersection of Webb and Waddell Streets. Both the Family 5K Fun Walk and the 5K run begin at the same time and are run on the same USAT&F-certified course. Registration opens at 8 am, the 5K race begins at 9 am, and the PolioPlus Kid's Fun Runs start at 10 am. The entry fees for the 5K are $25 for adults and $20 for students. On race day, the fees increase to $30 and $25, respectively. The entry fee for the PolioPlus Kid's Run (ages 8 and below) is $10 with no late fee. The fees include a t-shirt - guaranteed to all those registered by 9/15. Actually there will be two runs for the kids - 200 meters for those ages 5 and under and 400 meters for those ages 6-8. The race, which starts and finishes at the Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary, is managed by the Department of Parks, Recreational and Cultural Resources in Cary. In April of 2010, over 1,000 people participated. Derek Fenton (34:59) and Elise Easterling (39:23) were the overall winners in the 10K. Travis Walter (32:57) and Tara Wojcuechowski (36:41) hold the course records. In the 5K Glen Wright Colopy just missed tying the course mark by three seconds as he won in 16 minutes flat. In 2010 over 1,000 runners signed up for this event. Joe Moore (1:10:56) and Jennifer Modliszewski (1:22:09) were tops in the half-marathon, both setting new course records. In the 10K, Ben Godfrey (35:48) was the fastest. Kari Mayhew was the women’s champion with a course-record 42:08. Paul Himberger (34:10) holds the men’s course mark in the 10K. The race starts and finishes at 4001 Weston Parkway with most of the courses being on the trails of Umstead State Park.
