June 15 (Saturday) Louisburg – Midnight Run for Water 5K – 11 pm – 5,000 meters – Contact: Al Wheless at AlWheless@nc.rr.com Do NOT be misled. Although the run is titled “Midnight Run for Water 5K,” it does not start at midnight. Last year several runners made that mistake and arrived well after the 11 pm starting time. But in the race organizer’s defense, “Midnight Run” sounds a lot better then “11 O’clock PM Run.” The race is the idea of the Water Warriors - a group of middle school students from Crosscreek Charter School who are raising money for Kebeneti Primary School in Kericho, Kenya. The objective is to collect money in order to build a well so that the school will have access to freshwater. Female school children are walking 5 miles to reach bacteria- infested water and miss half of a day of school. The run occurs at 11 pm, because, with the time difference, it will be the same time the girls are leaving to collect their water for the day. Last year, over 130 runners and walkers registered for the event. Sean Kurdys was the only runner to break 20 minutes as he led the field in 19:49. Marissa Banks took the female title in 20:29 – finishing third overall. Since this was the first time this course was run, both are course records. The race starts and finishes at Louisburg College located at 501 North Main Street in Louisburg. Click here to download a course map.
