NOTE: The team results are listed here as sum of times. On race day,
the teams were ranked by sum of places. Since teams can register up to the
start of the race, it is easier to do the results by hand then enter them
into the computer. It is also easier to add the three lower places on each
team since that is easier than adding the three fastest times. (We would add
time if some idiot had not decided eons ago that there would be sixty seconds
in each minute instead of 100.)
Anyway, adding times and adding places only resulted in one change -- the
Open Women's Corporate Team standing. When adding places, the News and Observer
was first and IBM second. When adding times, those positions are reversed. This
does not change the awards given out at the race, but Corporate series points
will be assigned based on sum of times.
The are two other change in these results from those announced race day. On
the Centura team, the third place finisher ducked out of the chute because he was
sick and got back in about 25 places later. He knew what his finishing time as,
so we put him back in the results at the proper place. This made the Centura team
second in the Local Corpoate Competition and CDC third, regardless of whether one
adds times or places.
The other change involves the Martinez MTZ Painting, Inc. team in the Open
Corporate competition.
As many of you know, there were problems with the team registration procedures.
The entry form stated that all team registrations must be mailed together and that
no registrations would be allowed after 8 a.m. on race day. That was the guidelines
set forth by Danny White of Race Management Systems from Marion, SC. who was hired to
do the finish line and results. The entry form contained a place to put team name but
not a place to indicate in which of the six categories each team was competing. For
example, a company like Honeywell had more than 20 people put down their team as Honeywell
making it impossible for us to decide who went with which team in which division.
Several teams also objected to having to preregister their teams since that had
never been required before in any of the other races in the series.
As we understand it, as a result of this conflict between the corporate teams and
Danny, Danny called us and asked us if we were free to take the race over. We said we were,
and Danny resigned. That was about three weeks before the race.
The race sent out changes via e-mail lists and also by writing to the teams that
regulary participate in the corporate road race series informimg them of the change and
telling them they needed to register their teams at the race and there would be no cutoff.
The rule that all team entries had to be mailed together was also waived.
We tried to preregister some of the teams we knew, but we did not know whether
teams were local corporate or open corpoate. You cannot always tell by the addresses of
the team members. We only registered two teams of which we were sure.
The Martinez MTZ Painting, Inc. was one of those teams that wrote their team name on
the entry form, but we did not know whether they were a local or open corporate team.
They followed the original rules, and their team should have been registrated. They also were
not on the list of corporate teams that were notified of the changes.
After discussing this with Jim Wrenn and the race director, we have inserted the Martinez
team into the results.
Nedt year, the Chase of Champions will go back to the old method of not allowing pre-
registration of teams, and there should be no more confusuion.
And if you are upset by these changes, remember - in twenty years it will not make a
difference, so don't worry about it.
